CAP CITY TO HOST
COMEDY CENTRAL CONTEST

We don’t mean to brag--OK, we do mean
to brag--but Cap City Comedy Club has once again been singled out for
recognition on the national comedy scene, on the heels of the producers
of “Star Search” asking Cap City to hold a showcase on March
10, designed to yield contestants for the CBS show. In this case, we’re
one of only eight clubs across the country selected by Comedy Central
to host a semifinal round of “Laugh Riots,” the network’s
national stand-up comedy competition, which will be held at Cap City
on May 15.

“Laugh Riots” is geared
for comedians with somewhat limited professional experience. For example,
comics who were finalists in last year’s competition or have already
appeared on Comedy Central’s stand-up TV show, “Premium Blend,” are
not eligible to enter this contest. The competition is also confined
to individual performers--comedy teams, improv or sketch troupes cannot
participate.
For those who are eligible to compete, there are
some pretty significant prizes as stake. The first place winner receives
a cool ten grand in cash, a booking on “Premium Blend” and
a trip to Montreal to perform this July at the Just For Laughs International
Comedy Festival. Second, third and fourth place finalists also get booked
on “Premium Blend” and receive cash prizes of varying amounts.
From all the entries fielded nationally,
Comedy Central has selected eight semifinalists to perform at Cap City,
and the same thing happens with a different set of eight semifinalists
at each of the seven other locations. This puts Cap City in rarefied
territory, as the other locations include such big ol’ metropolitan
areas as Los Angeles, New York, Chicago and Boston. So that’s a
nice feather in Cap City’s cap, and clearly acknowledges the depth
of the impressive local talent pool. But if you think we’re done
bragging here, you’re sadly mistaken. We must first remind you that
last year’s winner of the whole nation-wide “Laugh Riots” was
one of our own, from that aforementioned local talent pool, and a Cap
City regular--MARTHA KELLY! It’s shaping up to be an exciting
