MATT
SADLER
October 7-11
You often hear music buffs marveling at the enormous
number of bands and musical artists spawned by the Austin local
scene--it is impressive, and if this were a music club, wed
probably address this phenomenon in gushing terms and excruciating
detail. But this is a comedy club, so I hope its okay if we
instead speak of a similar, if less splashy scenario: The Austin
comedy scene has likewise produced some uniquely gifted and highly
successful funny folks--Johnny Hardwick (voice of King Of
The Hills Dale and former writer-producer on that show)
and Howard Kremer and Brad Chip Pope (stars of Austin
Stories, co-writers of various HBO & other network pilots
and shows) come quickly to mind. Matt Sadler is clearly another
comedian who will extend the Austin tradition of local boys (&
girls) making very good. Matt has lived in Austin for more than
a dozen years (given the steady influx of artistic types who move
here, this practically makes him a native), and took his first steps
into professional joke-telling right here in Austin. After a number
of years of very hard work--honing the performance, steadily writing
new material, hitting the road to further develop his craft--hes
now a seasoned pro, with a slew of credits and accomplishments to
do Austin proud. Examples? What is it with you pushy people? OK,
keep your shirt on, Ill give you examples--dont I always?
Heck, as far back as the late 90s--OK, very late: 1999--he
was distinguishing himself locally and demonstrating he could play
in the big leagues, when HBO conducted a talent search that drew
more than 100 comedians, Matt was selected the best of the bunch,
and flown out to Hollywood to hold forth there at the Improv. More
recently, in 2005 to be exact, that experience was echoed somewhat
during the Carnival Comedy Challenge--about 75 comics were vying
in that contest, and if youve already figured out Matt took
first place here, too, youre starting to get the hang of this--and
damn near as sharp as Matt is, if you dont mind me saying
so. (Even if you do.) So it probably goes without saying there are
plenty of other triumphs in Matts career dossier. For instance,
beyond the more obvious and expected crisscrossing of these United
States to develop his skill and experience, hes also toured
overseas, performing for the military in the Middle East and Asia,
his TV credits include the aforementioned Austin Stories,
hes a very funny man and did I mention that hes an Austinite?
