JOSH
BLUE
OK, without wanting to be mean, let’s be
frank about most comedians with disabilities: If we’re decent
people, when we see such a comic perform, we cut him/her extra
slack, maybe even say afterwards to our friends we caught the
show with—much less to the comic, if a chatting opportunity
presents itself—that the comedian was really good/funny/strong/interesting/whatever…but,
if we’re really candid, the unspoken part, the thing we
say to ourselves, is “…for a comedian with a disability.”
Josh Blue totally turns that dynamic on its side, and allows—no,
requires--us to cut the politically-correct crap and respond to
a top-notch, genuinely gifted, often-hilarious funnyman. So, sure,
he has cerebral palsy. And, sure, he devotes a portion of his
act to talking about having cerebral palsy--but how could he not?
Besides, the bits about CP constitute some of his strongest material,
but as a truly stellar stand-up, everything he talks about is
strong material. The guy’s damn funny, plain and simple,
and there’s powerful evidence everywhere you look: He won
Season 4 of “Last Comic Standing” and, with all due
respect to Dat Phan, this was when the show fielded accomplished,
veteran comics, meaning the competition was stiff--so Josh’s
victory was quite an impressive triumph. He’s toured with
Carlos Mencia, consistently winning over huge venues full of Mencia
fans. He’s received rave reviews from publications, comedy
critics, bloggers and other online aficionados, many of whom seem
to employ the phrase “he’s frickin’ funny.”
So, again, Josh Blue is damn funny and, in this case, funny really
is funny. No qualifying clauses, no left-handed. He’s just
funny. And as yet another measure of that, he’s already
playing theaters, performing arts centers and other larger venues--so
who knows how many more opportunities there’ll be to see
him in a club. Don’t miss him this week at Cap City. With
Chip Chantry. With Dave Huntsberger
