If you weren’t paying close attention or
just didn’t otherwise know any better, you might think Jo
Koy--who’s exploded on to the stand-up scene--is an overnight
success. Wrong, Captain Cliché. For one thing, he started
doing stand-up in 1996, so the success he’s enjoying now
isn’t exactly beginner’s luck. Hell, it’s not
luck at all. Jo has worked extremely hard, for a number of years,
from his initial foray into joke telling in Las Vegas, to his
subsequent effort to develop and hone his act there and at clubs
and colleges across the country. He got booked on BET’s
“Comic View”--his first television spot--and then
he was truly rolling. Other TV appearances followed, including
triumphs on such high-profile network programs as “Jimmy
Kimmel Live’ and ”The Tonight Show With Jay Leno.”
And then his status as a rising new force on the comedy scene
was ratified by Carlos Mencia, who selected Jo Koy to join him
on Mencia’s 40-date “Punisher Tour.” So, when
Jo Koy becomes a fabulous, huge superstar, please don’t
say you weren’t warned--or that you missed a chance to see
him in his pre-superstar days, at Cap City Comedy Club.
