It would take too long to cite all of Doug Benson’s
credits, but here’s a small sampling: How does a little show
called NBC’s “Last Comic Standing” grab you? Fact:
he finished top six during his run on the show last season. Benson
is also a series regular on VH-1’s “Best Week Ever.”
2008 was a great year for
Benson. After premiering at the South By South West Film Festival,
Benson’s documentary film Super High Me became all the buzz.
Super High Me explores the current debate over medical marijuana
use in California and the United States, specifically focusing on
the conflict between federal and state law and the explosive growth
in medical marijuana dispensaries in Los Angeles over the past two
years. As part of his journey, Benson smokes, eats and vaporizes
medical marijuana for thirty consecutive days in order to get "super
high." But there is a catch--first Benson must go
thirty days without any marijuana and undertake a number of tests,
completing the same tests while medicated and while sober, in an
effort to find out what marijuana does and how it really affects
people. The film is now available on DVD.
Fresh off the success of the critically-acclaimed
film Super High Me, Benson released his first CD Professional Humoredian
on ASpecialThing Records on July 15th. Professional Humoredian is
available for purchase at www.astrecords.com, select Amoeba Records
outlets, on iTunes, Amazon MP3, and many other online digital music
stores. In true Benson style, Professional Humoredian was recorded
at the Hollywood Improv on April 20th, 2008, best known as the stoner
holiday 4/20. In Benson’s words, "I am a multi-tasking
pot smoker. Just the other day I was walking down the street, putting
eye drops in my eyes, talking on my cell phone and getting hit by
a car."
Benson also makes recurring appearances on ABC’s
“Jimmy Kimmel Live,” “Chelsea Lately” and
“Red-Eye.” On the classic sitcom “Friends,”
he had the nerve to hit on Jennifer Aniston and this year made a
special appearance on “How I Met Your Mother.” He has
his own half-hour special on Comedy Central, a guest appearance
on “The Sarah Silverman Program,” and oops, almost forgot,
got Larry David in a headlock on HBO’s “Curb Your Enthusiasm.”
If that’s not enough for you, he’s a co-creator/writer/star
of “The Marijuana-Logues,” a show that’s been
a hit (small pun intended) in clubs and theatres from Los Angeles
to New York – and drew a bongload of rave reviews. There’s
a CD, also called The Marijuana-Logues, and a book, The Marijuana-Logues:
Everything About Pot That We Could Remember. In 2006, High Times
Magazine named Benson Stoner of the Year. He also expresses his
love of movies in podcasts called “I Love Movies” available
on iTunes.
