Craig Gass is an impressionist, but if you’re
starting to sprint the other direction--thinking we mean some
marginally-talented prankster who’s gonna pull his hair
back and launch into an impression of Jack Nicholson--come on
back and hear me out. Or hear him out. This guy is a fantastic
impressionist --maybe the best in the biz at the moment; certainly
the most cutting edge. OK, sure, he’s been known to do Christopher
Walken, which has sort of become the Nicholson of this generation.
But Gass specializes in very public figures--actors, comedians,
musicians--that most impressionists can’t touch, and more
than a few that his contemporaries wouldn’t attempt. In
the former category, let’s take his Sam Kinison: it’s
so perfect, down to the heaving cackle, that you’d swear
Kinison was still alive and standing at the mic. He’s no
less spot-on when tackling KISS leader/reality TV star Gene Simmons
or former “Saturday Night Live”/”30 Rock”
star Tracy Morgan. He’s a regular guest on “The Howard
Stern Show,” and at one point he told a story about Alec
Baldwin hearing that Al Pacino was angry at him, then Baldwin
ran into Pacino, who was with Beverly D’Angelo--in recreating
this saga, Gass did Baldwin, Pacino AND D’Angelo flawlessly.
This story no doubt came from his stint working with Baldwin during
guest role on NBC’s “Las Vegas,” in which Gass
portrayed a comedian who began his performance by stirring patrons’
drinks with his penis. We can assure you with some confidence
that this won’t be how Craig Gass begins his shows this
week at Cap City, just as we can assure you that Gass is an exciting,
singular talent--don’t miss him. With Trey Galyon.
